A minimalist schedule strips back to what genuinely matters: what affects health (kitchen, bathroom, bins), what affects function (tidy enough to find things), and nothing else. Surfaces don't need to sparkle. Floors don't need to be eaten off.
If you can do this list weekly, your home is fine. Anything beyond is a hobby, not housework.

A genuinely minimalist home cleans in a fraction of the time of a standard one because there is less surface to dust, less stuff to move, less laundry to do. The schedule reflects that — fewer tasks, shorter sessions. But this only holds if you keep decluttering. A minimalist schedule on a maximalist house is just a stressful schedule.
The 30-minute weekly cap
For genuinely minimal homes (under 60 m² with limited possessions), 30 minutes a week is enough. If your schedule is consistently overshooting, the answer is rarely "clean more efficiently" — it is "own less".
How fairness is calculated
Behind the scenes, every chore gets a numeric weight from its effort (small / medium / large), frequency, and a difficulty modifier for the genuinely unpleasant tasks. The algorithm distributes weight across people, not chore counts — three counter wipes do not equal one toilet scrub, and the schedule respects that. What's the absolute minimum cleaning to keep a house functional?
Weekly: clean toilet, wipe kitchen counters, take out trash, vacuum one common area. That's enough to prevent health problems and keep the house usable.
Is it OK to clean only once a week?
Yes — for most one or two-person households without pets. Add daily kitchen if you cook a lot, daily bin if it smells.
How do you simplify cleaning?
Strip out tasks that don't affect health or function. Most weekly cleaning lists contain tasks that genuinely don't need doing weekly.
How do I get someone in my household to actually follow the schedule?
Make it visible (printed, on the fridge), make it specific (named tasks not 'help out'), and make it short-cycle (weekly, not monthly). The schedule itself is most of the work — most people will follow a clear chart they can see, but will ignore a vague verbal agreement.
What happens if someone misses their week?
Don't try to 'catch up' missed weeks — it punishes the household for one person's bad week. Carry on with the next week's rotation and treat the missed week as a reminder to talk about workload, not as debt.
Should I include pets, kids and partners on the chart?
Anyone who can hold a sponge appears on the chart. Even a four-year-old can be 'wipe the lower kitchen cupboards' — it's not about getting a clean cupboard, it's about building the habit.
How much can a minimalist actually clean in 30 minutes?
In a minimal 1-bed: full bathroom, full kitchen, vacuum and one mop pass — comfortably. In a maximalist 1-bed: kitchen and bathroom, nothing else.
